Beth Alpha, organic

Eco

Information

Finally we have found organically grown seed for our old favorite Beth Alpha. It is a very common variety from the Middle East where it is found in every market and has been cultivated for generations. It is early and we can grow it both in protected locations in the open and in greenhouses.

The fruit is around 15 cm long, dark green, smooth, completely without thorns and has all the typical advantages of a delicate salad cucumber. It bears fruit throughout the season as long as it is harvested continuously.

A misprint on the the seed bag says Beit Alpha.

Cultivation advice

Sowing

The seeds are usually sown indoors or in a hotbed 4-5 weeks before planting outside. Sow in pots, 1-2 cm deep and 3-4 seeds in each one. The fastest and most reliable germination is at a temperature of 22-27 °C. Thin out to 1-2 plants in each pot and keep them in a light, airy place. Temper the plants before setting them out, which should be when the soil has warmed up and all risk of frost is over. In really warm places it is possible to sow them directly.

Spacing

Between the plants 10-25 cm, between the rows 100-150 cm. The climbing vines of the cucumber can be bound up to save space.

Harvest

Harvest the cucumbers gradually as they reach the desired length. Do not let them overgrow and become unappetizing. Fresh cucumbers cannot be stored for any length of time, but pickled or soured they can last a while.

Seed

1 gram is 30-40 seeds.
One portion contains 6 seeds.
