Lokförare Bergfälts Jätteärt, organic seeds

Eco Heirloom

Information

Sweet, crunchy and HUGE! The pea, which in recent years has become real popular, is really worth growing both for its taste and size. The plant grows to about 200-300 cm high and needs support. A good, rich-yielding sugar pea that produces large pods (15-20 cm) over a long period of time. The pods can remain on the plant for a long time without becoming stringy.

The variety was collected in Dalarna in connection with POM's seed rebellion in 2002-2005. The uprising resulted, in addition to a lot of seeds, in the book Klint Karins kålrot and Mor Kristins Böna (Klint Karin's turnip and mother Kristin's bean) written by Lena Nygårds and Matti Wiking Leino. There you can read the following description of Lokförare (locomotive driver) Bergfälts giant pea:

In the early 1940s, Alida and Efraim Andersson received seeds of this giant pea from a train driver Bergfält in Ludvika. When Alida and Efraim moved from their house in the 1970s, they wanted the pea to live on and gave it to gardener Olle Ridelius in Vassbo. He in turn gave it to the association Sesam. How the train driver, who lived between 1890-1945, got hold of the seeds is hard to say, but there have been different varieties of giant sugar peas since the 19th century.

One portion contains about 20 seeds.

Cultivation advice

Sowing

Mangetout peas are sown as soon as the soil is ready and then continually from spring through summer. Sow the peas about 3 cm deep, possibly a little deeper when sowing in summer because of the need for moisture.

Spacing

Sow with a space of 5-8 cm between the plants and 35-50 cm between the rows. Peas can also be sown in double rows of 10-15 cm between the rows or scattered in broad bands. Tall and medium tall sorts need something to climb on.

Harvest

The mangetout is harvested before the seeds have developed appreciably.
Peas tolerate 1 degree or 2 of frost in autumn but easily become spotted and loose their crispness after a few nights of frost. All kinds of peas are eaten fresh, boiled or fried etc. They can also be dried, frozen or preserved.

Seed

1 g contains about 3-4 seedsOne portion contains about 20 seeds.
