Toothache Plant, organic seeds

Eco

Information

This plant should have warning text - the small, yellow flowers are strong and explode and really tickle the mouth. Thanks to its special numbing effect, the plant has received several names around the world and is called, for example, Szechuan buttons, electric daisy, buzz buttons, ting flower and paracress. It probably has its original home in Brazil, but grows excellently here as well.

Serve the flower buds together with a glass of sparkling  and give your guests a real surprise, or sprinkle some of the flower over the food for an effective topping. Fresh leaves can be chewed for a numbing sensation and for their antibacterial properties and have traditionally been used for toothaches.

The plant has a low, branched growth and in Sweden it is mainly grown in pots outdoors or in greenhouses or conservatories. The bright yellow flowers are popular with pollinating insects.

The whole plant is edible.

One portion contains approx. 75 seeds.

Sowing

Sow the seeds 4-6 weeks after transplanting, which happens after the last frost. The seeds germinate faster in light, but can also be covered with a thin layer of soil. optimum germination temperature is 22-24 °C. Replant the small plants when they are manageable into slightly larger pots, either singly or in groups of 3.

Spacing

Keep a plant distance of approx. 30 cm between plants and approx. 40 cm between rows. Can be planted individually or in groups of 3.

Harvest

Harvest the flowers fresh, even after drying they retain their numbing effect when chewed.

The leaves can be picked at any time, but it is best to wait until the plant has grown a bit larger. Continue picking leaves during and after flowering. Use fresh leaves for best flavor.
