Stor Gråärt, organic seeds

Eco Heirloom

Information

Gråärt, ”Grey-pea”, is a traditional staple food up here in the North. There are many different varieties spread all over the country, and historically, it has been a very important source of protein to those growing it. There is evidence that even the Vikings cultivated the grey-pea, and it’s said to have made them grow tall and strong.

We can now offer grey-pea in larger quantities for those of you who would like to cultivate on a bigger scale. This variety does not have a specific name, it is just called large grey-pea. The name indicates that the variety is tall and gives pods with extra large peas. The seeds are cultivated in Sweden and are organically certified.

The grey-pea has had a recent upswing in our culinary culture after a long time of being seen mostly as bland food eaten during scarce times. It was often served as a thick porridge with milk which was filling, but perhaps not very exciting. Nowadays we see the grey-pea in quite a different light: a delicacy with its’ rich taste of pea. Eat it the way it is with some oil and salt, or preboiled in salads, as patties or in stews and soups.

One portion contains about 60 seeds and sows at least 4–5 meters.
