Dalmatin, organic seeds

Eco New variety

Information

Eye-catching shelling bean. All dog owners know exactly what coverage these beans have. Or if you like dairy cows. Clearly marked in black and white. Yin and Yang. Very decorative and also mature quite early on bushy plants. The somewhat flat, well-filled pods are around 14 cm. During a normal summer, they mature fully in our zone 3 and spread wonder and joy on the dinner table. The Dalmatian bean, which probably comes from the Czech Republic, can also be enjoyed as an early green french bean and has been grown for a long time both for its appearance and its robust bean flavor.

One portion contains about 40 seeds.

Cultivation advice

Sowing

Do not sow too early. For if the seeds are to germinate and not rot, the soil must be warmed up to at least 12oC, preferably 16oC. Sow the beans 3-5 cm deep.

Spacing

Space the plants 10–15 cm apart, and leave 35–50 cm between rows. In garden beds, the rows can be placed closer together. But be careful, beans need good air circulation. In humid climates, it’s best to use wider spacing between both plants and rows. Bean leaf spot, a common fungal disease, can easily affect the plants, especially if they are too crowded.

Harvest

The shelling bean is a neglected vegetable, which can be enjoyed in almost all the stages of its development. The pods are used as haricots verts and the seeds when they have swelled but not matured are used in dishes by themselves or in casseroles, soups etc. They are excellent for preserving and freezing.

They are usually hardy and fast, but to get completely ripe, dry beans in central and northern Sweden, they should be grown under some form of protective sheet in most summers.
