Rossa di Treviso, organic seeds
Cichorium intybus var. foliosum
Is a pretty, elegant lettuce from Treviso in Northern Italy. The head is torpedo-shaped and becomes a deep wine-red when the weather grows cooler in autumn. The leaves resemble small boats of intense contrast between the shining wine-red of the leaves and the dazzling white nerves. Rossa di Trevo, which was already grown in the 1700s, is tender with a faint bitterness. Roots can be stored and forced as winter lettuce. A portion contains about 300 seeds.
